Undergraduate Capstone / Internship Registration Procedures
Undergraduate Geography and Environmental Studies majors may do a “capstone” or “internship” to complete your undergraduate degree.
What is the difference?
An internship is external (e.g., you get a job, work in a lab, etc.) and a capstone is internal (i.e., you work with a full-time faculty member in the Department).
The registration process for each is not like a normal class. It begins in the semester prior to taking the class.
Capstone registration process
In the semester prior to taking the class:
- Meet with a full-time faculty person in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science (faculty profiles)
- If the faculty person agrees to work with you, they are your “capstone advisor”
- Ask your capstone advisor how to write a proposal
- Write a proposal of what you intend to do
- Once you and your capstone advisor agree on the proposal, sign the appropriate contract at: http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/forms/index.html
- Choose a three-credit class (e.g., PGEOG 39300, not PGEOG 39100)
- Send both the proposal and contract to either geogmajor@hunter.cuny.edu or esmajor@hunter.cuny.edu
- You will be notified when registration is open
- Finally, you register
The above is the same process for an independent study that does not count as capstone. In this case, the number of credits may vary.
Internship registration process
- Apply to many internships (not just one)
- Get an internship offer
- Fill out pages one to six in the appropriate internship packet at: http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/forms/index.html
- Send the packet to a full-time faculty member or the major advisor, ask if the internship qualifies for credits, and ask what you need to submit to earn those credits
- Provided all parties agree, sign the appropriate internship contract at: http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/forms/index.html
- Send internship packet and signed contract to either geogmajor@hunter.cuny.edu or esmajor@hunter.cuny.edu
- You will be notified when registration is open
- Finally, you register
